Planning in the Millennium:
Smart Growth vs. Sprawl

September 22nd- 24th, 1999 ­ Atlanta, Georgia

The Georgia chapter of the American Planning Association in conjunction and cooperation with Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee Chapters and the Interprofessional Community Design Coalition (ICDC) are proud to present the 1999 Southeastern Regional Conference. Planning in the Millennium: Smart Growth vs. Sprawl, September 22nd- 24th at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. This multi-state conference includes 45 sessions and 6 mobile workshops , plus lots of exciting opportunities to meet and greet colleagues in an informal setting.

Growth is examined in 5 tracts: Sprawl; Rural and Small Towns; Transportation and Environment,; Implementation: Land Use, Zoning, and Regulation; and Innovative Programs and Professional Development, at the national, southeastern, and local levels.

Who Should Attend?

Planning professionals, including Planning Directors and staff of city, county, regional and state planning agencies, Planning Commissioners, college professors in the fields of planning, urban design and architecture, private sector planners, consultants, architects, engineers, landscape architects, and others involved with or interested in urban and regional planning and design will find something exciting and beneficial at this conference.

Location & Transportation?

All conference sessions and evening events will be held at (or within walking distance of) the Westin Peachtree Hotel in downtown Atlanta. An automobile will not be necessary to attend conference functions. MARTA is one block away and provides easy access within the Atlanta area and to and from the airport. Valet and self parking are available at or near the hotel and the Atlanta Airport Shuttle 800.524.3400 will also provide direct service from airport.

Your full registration packet will contain a wealth of information on activities and tours available to you during your stay.

Registration/information?

Conference Registration and Information will be located on the 7th floor of the Hotel and on Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30-4:30 and on Friday from 9:00-12:00. This are will also be location of the all day refreshments, exhibits, and the Consultants Reception on Thursday night. Programs begin at 9:00 AM on Wednesday and end at 1:30 on Friday.

Lodging?

A limited number of rooms have been blocked the Westin Peachtree, 210 Peachtree Street from Tuesday September 21st- Saturday September 25th at a special rate of $119/night. Reservations can be made at this rate through August 31st. Please dial directly at 1.800.WESTIN-1, ask for the Georgia Planning Association Conference rate.

Braves night @ Turner field?

The Georgia Planning Association is sponsoring a special night out at Turner Field, Tuesday September 21st to kick-off the conference. Limited tickets are available for this 7:40 PM game. Please check the appropriate box on the registration form, early registration ensures you a ticket!!

Additional activies?

Sessions may only be attended by those who are fully registered, however spouses may attend evening events with the purchase of a spouse registration. In addition to the many fabulous restaurants, the following activities for Thursday may require advance purchase: River Dance at the Atlanta Civic Center 404.817.8700. * Braves v. Mets @1:10 PM 1.800.326.4000.* "Chess" featuring music by Tim Rice with lyrics by members of ABBA 404.733.5000.* The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with guest violinist 404.733.5000.
